The Good Wife

I love being married. I truly enjoy taking care of my husband. I make his lunch most days and do my best to at have dinner on the table when he gets home. It makes me happy to fold his clothes, make him breakfast, and kiss him goodbye in the mornings. He sometimes feels funny about all that special attention, and he constantly tells me how much he appreciates it, because he never wants to take it for granted.

Being that kind of wife comes naturally to me, and the more I reflect on it, I know why. That's the kind of wife and mom my mom was. It surprised me to learn that she didn't always enjoy some of those domestic things (especially cooking!). She was always so careful to teach me, and I have great memories from childhood of all those lessons on meatloaf and laundry and the art of wrapping Christmas presents. Even though she's not married anymore and even though my dad wasn't a great husband, she was a great wife.

Although she may not have understood all the reasons at the time, she recognized her special place as her husband's helper (Genesis 2:18) and the keeper of our home (Titus 2:5), even when she had to go back to work. And because she did that job wholeheartedly, even when she didn't exactly enjoy it, I know now what a good wife looks like, and my husband is blessed for her obedience.

As God teaches me through my mom's example (which she learned from her own mom), I understand that my obedience isn't just important for me. It's important for the people who are watching me. Regardless of our desire for or understanding of what God commands us to do, we should do it. We have no way of knowing how generations to come could be affected by our obedience to the Lord. Just remember when God asks something of you today that it only takes one person to make a difference in the lives of many. (Genesis 6-8; Genesis 37:5-11; Exodus 3:15; Luke 1; John 19:30)

Father, thank You for teaching me all those years ago what I would need to know to be an attentive wife today. Help me to find treasures of knowledge today and store them in my heart so I will have them when I need them in the future.

In His wise and wonderful love,
Amy
